Change your thoughts, Change your life
There are three keys to healthy living. Eating well, moving well and thinking well. If being healthy, and having abundant energy is important to you, then it is useful to observe your thinking. Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor Company said “He can who thinks he can, and he can’t who thinks he can’t. This is an inexorable, indisputable law”.
Our thoughts can work for us, and help our dreams become reality, or they can work against us, sabotaging our goals.
The reality is that our thoughts produce our actions, actions become habits and habits eventually determine our destiny.
Elite athletes, such as our own Olympians, are familiar with these concepts. An essential part of their training involves visualising themselves competing and winning the event. The benefit of thinking it through is that you can always perform your best. Visualisation strengthens the brain pathways involved in doing a certain action. This in turn aids the body’s ability to perform that action.
We can help our children learn healthy thinking patterns also. The best way to do this is by our own language. If a child is running down a steep slope and we call out “Don’t fall over” their subconscious brain gets the dominant message of “fall over” and the mental picture they instantly get is of falling over. The likelihood of them falling at that stage is high. Alternatively, we could call out, “step carefully”, or “stay steady”. Now their subconscious brain is getting a positive message that it can respond to and the mental image is of being upright. The child is more likely to come to a stop safely.
Today, pay attention to your thoughts and the mental movies that are going on in your head throughout the day. Are they helpful? You can choose to change these thoughts and mental pictures. When you change them to reflect the life you desire, rather than the fears that can dominate our thinking you’ll change your life. Henry Ford proved it, he not only changed his own life, he changed the lives of his family, his employees and our society.
